The Atlantic Sportsman's Club has acquired the "Old" North American Woodcock Championship Grounds at 526 Springhill Rd Havelock NB. We plan September 2024 to host a new 1-hour Open Woodcock Classic dedicated to the memory of Jack Mayer Jr., founder and past Secretary-Treasurer of the North American Woodcock Championship and Futurity for over 30 years. Jack passed in 2002 at the age of 76. He and his lovely wife Margaret welcomed Field Trialers from the United States and Canada with the utmost class and professionalism. Jack retired after 38 years with Snap-on Tools Canada Ltd. as a sales dealer. He was a member of the Moncton Junior Bruins, a Member of the Maritime Hockey Champions in 1945, a Past President and Honorary Life Time Member of the Moncton Gun Club, and an avid skeet shooter. Many who knew Jack and Margaret have fond memories of them, Jack was quick to ask for your entry fees or Futurity dues and respected by all. Jack was also quick to set you straight and enjoyed offering a taste of Bacardi 151. His right-hand man for all those years was Charlie Clarke who owns 300 acres of property used by The Maritime Bird Dog Club for the Championship and Futurity. After the Championship/Futurity moved to McAdam NB Charlie continued to maintain his property for his friends for deer hunting. Without Charlie and his commitment to Field Trials hosted on his property, I'm sure trialing in the Maritimes wouldn't be the same. Charlie's hospitality towards the Atlantic Sportsman's Club over the last few weekends is nothing short of amazing. He spent three days with me walking about his beautiful property pointing out work he's done to improve the habitat for grouse and woodcock. Below are the proposed routes for the 2024 courses for the Jack Mayer Jr Open Woodcock Classic, the date we are hoping for is the third weekend in September but that's dependent on dates first used by The Northern New England Open Woodcock Championship and The Northeastern Grouse & Woodcock Championship in Maine. We are hoping the two Clubs continue with their traditional dates so we can squeeze in a weekend for this Classic.
